The wool coat, taken apart: weight, length, and lining

A wool coat is four decisions hiding in one garment: the weight of the cloth, the length, the lining, and where the shoulder lands. Everything else (collar shape, button count, color) is taste. These four are engineering. This note takes them apart.

Weight: the number that sets the ceiling

Coat cloth is quoted in ounces per linear yard, and that number tracks warmth more directly than any other spec on the label. A 12-oz coating is a fashion coat for autumn; a 20-oz melton is a winter coat; Filson lists its Mackinaw wool at 24 oz per linear yard, which is work-coat territory. Heavier cloth traps more air and blocks more wind, but weight is not the whole story: weave density and fiber blend change the result, so treat the ounce count as a ceiling rather than a measurement.

One property is worth knowing separately: wool keeps insulating when damp. Filson states its Mackinaw wool “insulates if wet,” and that is a property of the fiber rather than of the jacket. It is the reason wool beats down in a drizzle that never quite turns to rain.

Length: bought for the scene

Length decides what the coat goes over. Hip-length clears a jacket and trousers without dragging at the seat; knee-length is the versatile middle; below-the-knee covers dresses, skirts, and tall boots, and runs warmest because it seals the largest gap. Everlane’s ReWool Belted Blanket Coat states a 45.5-inch body, about 115.6 cm, which lands below the knee on most frames and mid-calf on shorter ones. Buy the length for the scenes you actually have, then adjust the weight to the winter.

Lining: the trade nobody prints

A full lining adds a second air gap and makes the coat glide over knitwear. An unlined or double-face coat drops a layer, weighs less, and drapes closer to the body. Everlane’s blanket coat is the clearest current example of the split decision: lined sleeves so it slips on, unlined body for drape. The Uniqlo Wool Cashmere Chesterfield Coat goes the other way with a full polyester lining, which is easier over a sweater and more forgiving of whatever is underneath. Unlined is lighter and more fluid; lined is warmer and smoother. Nearly all of them, lined or not, are dry clean only, and that maintenance fact matters more day to day than the lining itself.

The shoulder line

This is the dimension you cannot tailor. Sleeves can be shortened and a waist taken in, but the shoulder seam has to sit at your shoulder point on the day you buy. Raglan sleeves (the seam runs from collar to underarm) trade a tailored shoulder for layering room, which earns its keep over a chunky knit. Uniqlo’s chesterfield is described as sized to style over a jacket or blazer, with a narrow shoulder width for a slender look: two different intentions in one product. Check where the seam lands before anything else.

The behavior table

DimensionWhat it changesHow to read the numbers
Weight (oz per linear yard)Warmth ceiling, wind block12-16 oz: autumn city coat; 18-24 oz: winter; 24 oz and up: work coat (our read)
LengthScene and layeringHip: over jackets; knee: most versatile; below knee: warmest, dressiest
LiningEase over layers, drape, weightLined: smooth over knits; double-face: lighter, closer drape
ShoulderFit you cannot change laterSeam should sit at your shoulder point; raglan trades shape for layering room

How to buy, in order

Length first, because the coat has to fit the scenes you actually wear. Weight second, matched to your winter. Lining third, decided by what goes underneath. Shoulder last — the pass-fail check.

What we would pick

Filson Mackinaw Wool Cruiser Jacket Everlane ReWool Belted Blanket Coat Uniqlo Wool Cashmere Chesterfield Coat

The three divide the field cleanly. The Filson Mackinaw Wool Cruiser Jacket is the documented heavyweight: 24 oz per linear yard, stitched in Seattle, built for weather rather than offices. The Everlane ReWool Belted Blanket Coat is the long, unlined-body answer at a stated 45.5 inches, for skirts, dresses, and tall boots. The Uniqlo Wool Cashmere Chesterfield Coat is the classic fully lined overcoat, with cashmere in the blend. For a first wool coat in a city winter, the middle choice usually wins: length and lining decide comfort more often than ounces do.

Read the ounce count before the style name, and the shoulder seam before both.

The picks

01

Filson Mackinaw Wool Cruiser Jacket

The heavyweight

The heavyweight end of the wool-coat range: 24 oz per linear yard of Mackinaw wool, patented in 1914 and still stitched in Seattle. Filson states the cloth insulates even when wet, which is the claim that matters in a damp, cold city. The relaxed cut is built for midweight layers, and the cargo and map pockets make it the pick for actual weather rather than office weather.

Works
  • + 24 oz/LY wool — the heaviest documented weight in this set
  • + Brand states it insulates even when wet
  • + Made in USA, with a build meant to be repaired rather than replaced
Watch
  • – Dry clean only, like nearly every wool coat
  • – Relaxed workwear cut reads utility, not tailoring
  • – The weight is real — it earns its keep below about 40°F

02

Everlane ReWool Belted Blanket Coat

The long layer

The long, unlined option: a double-face recycled-wool blend at a stated 45.5 inches, with lined sleeves over an unlined body so it slips on and still drapes. It is the clearest example of the lining trade in practice — lighter over the torso, softer in movement than the warmth suggests, and oversized by design.

Works
  • + Unlined body is lighter and drapes better than a fully lined coat
  • + Stated 45.5-inch length covers dresses and trousers alike
  • + Double-face construction has no separate lining seam to split
Watch
  • – Oversized fit — size down unless you want the full volume
  • – Recycled blend is just over half wool
  • – Dry clean only

03

Uniqlo Wool Cashmere Chesterfield Coat

The classic

The classic fully lined overcoat: 90% wool with 10% cashmere in the shell to soften the hand, and a full polyester lining that goes on and off cleanly over knitwear. A three-button front, a longer length, and chest canvas give it more structure than the weight suggests — the traditional answer to the question of one wool coat.

Works
  • + Wool-cashmere blend reads softer than plain wool alone
  • + Full lining makes layering over knits easy
  • + Classic chesterfield cut works from level 2 to level 3 formality
Watch
  • – Polyester lining is less breathable than cupro or viscose
  • – Dry clean only
  • – Narrow shoulder — confirm the fit before sizing up for layers

Frequently asked questions

Does a heavier wool coat always mean a warmer coat?
Not always. Weight is the clearest single signal — heavier cloth traps more air — but weave density, fiber, and lining change the result too. A dense 18-oz wool can out-warm a loose 22-oz blend. Treat the ounce count as a ceiling, not as a measurement.
What length wool coat should I buy?
Hip-length works over jackets and trousers; knee-length is the most versatile; below-the-knee is the warmest and dressiest. Measure against a coat you already like, and buy for the scene you will wear it in most, not the coldest one.
Can a wool coat be tailored?
Sleeves can be shortened and the waist taken in, within limits. The shoulder seam is the one point that cannot be moved without rebuilding the coat, so check that it sits at your shoulder point before you buy.
